It was love at first sight when I looked in her eye's. So full of trust, a window to a heart of gold.
Nikki was special from the beginning, she was a shephard/rott mix. When she came home she looked rott but as she grew the more like the shephard she became. Her look's did not matter for it was all a part of her personality, almost human at times she was.
Nikki had a way of knowing when those around her were feeling down, be it ill or sad. She would come and place her head in your lap as if to say" I understand " She could do all the normal trick's that most dog's do but she went beyond those and learned a few that suprised even me. You could hold up 4 fingers and she would bark 4 times, but best of all was when she would play dead. Lay perfectly still, hardly breathing, and she would not move until you told her to get up. Nikki was very smart.
After my mom's lab was put down, she became my niece Cassie's favorite. Always going for walks or playing fetch. The best times were when they were just sitting together doing nothing.
More than once she had her fur cryed upon, did she care no not at all, for she was a true companion, never
once complaining when her dinner was late, or I came home late. She new I would be their in time.
When Josh arived she never once nipped at him as he pulled her fur or ears she just walked away when she had enough, The same when Jake was born. She looked after them as if they were her own.
But as with all good things her time had come. It was decision that I was not ready to make, for this past year had been a hard one on me and the boy's, their dad and my husband walked out of our lives. The divorce was finalized only 10 day's before I made the decision to end her suffering.
Nikki had come ill, the vet thought it was an allergic reaction at first and tried to treat it but it just got worse. My once beautiful friend had lost all the fur on her face, and was spreading to her neck and body. During this time her eye's would swell up almost to the point on not being able to see, and she became withdrawn from the family.
It was with a heavy heart that the decision was made. The ultimate price for a friend a dear as she was I could let her suffer no more. April 30,2001 will always be engraved in my heart as it was the day I showed my Nikki how much she was truly loved. All that new her saddly miss her..
THE FOLLOWING IS A STORY OF WHERE OUR PET'S GO WHEN THEIR TIME HAS COME.
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
THERE IS A BRIDGE CONNECTING HEAVEN AND EARTH,IT'S CALLED THE RAINBOW BRIDGE BECAUSE OF IT'S MANY COLORS.JUST THIS SIDE OF THE RAINBOW BRIDGE there is a land of medows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, fresh water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young once again. Those who are maimed are made whole. They play all day with each other.
But there is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them and cared for them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing, and look's up!
The nose twitches!the ears perk up! the eye's are staring! And this one suddenly run's from the group!
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet,
You take him or her in your arm's and embrace.Your face is kissed and kissed again and again.and you once more look into the eye's of your trusting pet.
And then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be seperated.
